Indoor Cycling

How do I register for a bike?

You can reserve a bike by logging onto your Wheel House account, selecting a class and a specific cycling spot. If you are part of a group of riders our friendly front desk staff can assist with moving your group together so that you can ride as a pack.

What should I expect if I am new to indoor cycling?

One of the best things about indoor cycling is that it can be adapted to any fitness level. With the ability to adjust the resistance level on the bike, one can gauge the level of the workout to suit each rider's abilities. With every class comes a new level of confidence and strength. If you are new to Wheel House indoor cycling, make sure you arrive 15 minutes early to enable us to do a bike setup orientation prior to your first class. We personally guide you through setting up your bike and recording your settings so you always have them. Wheel House indoor cycling is challenging. Most important thing is to be patient with your self. Don't expect to be able to do everything right away. Wheel House indoor cycling is great for all fitness levels; just take it at your own pace. Listen to your body and adjust the resistance on your bike accordingly. We don't want you to be intimidated. The only question is how hard you want to work on any given day.

What's so special about an indoor cycle?

There is nothing like the energy of classes at Wheel House. Our instructors are well trained and are very motivating and supportive. Music is key. Our instructors are known for the best music. So, energy, motivation and music come together to make classes at Wheel House safe, fun and effective. Regardless of how fit, flexible or coordinated you are, you'll get a great workout.

It looks hard, do I need to be in great shape?

No. Almost anyone can benefit from a Wheel House indoor cycling class. You can go at your own pace by controlling the resistance on your bike. Taking indoor cycling classes is a great way to get fit. If you are concerned about taking a class due to a physical condition, ask your doctor before taking a class for the first time.

How many calories are burned per Indoor cycling class?

This all depends on the weight of the individual and the amount of exertion used. Research indicates that on average, indoor cyclists burn from 400-550 calories in a 45 minutes workout (you can burn up to 800). The number of calories you'll burn depends on a number of factors, including your weight and the intensity at which you exercise.  The "distance" traveled depends on cadence; however as an estimate, an average 45-minute class at a cadence of 80-110 rpm is equivalent to approximately 20-30 miles on the road.

Will an indoor cycle class bulk up my legs?

When climbing you increase resistance and work on lower body strength building. Legs are sculpted and metabolisms are boosted. Since climbs rarely last for more than a few minutes, there is not enough time to build bulk.

Is there any way to make the seat more comfortable?

As a beginner, the seat and the bike in general require a little getting used to. During this phase it sometimes helps to wear padded bike shorts or use a cushioned gel seat. In a short period of time you won't necessarily need either.

Do cycling shoes really make a difference and if so, what type should I get?

Cycling shoes do offer a more secure position in the pedals enabling the cyclist to work much more efficiently. Pedal strokes become more powerful. Any bike shoe will do, but we recommend Look Delta and SPD-compatible cleats for indoor cycling bikes.  If you don’t have shoes, our bikes work with running shoes as well; the more supportive soles the shoes have the better.

Where do I buy cycling shoes and what clips are best for just spinning?

You can go to your local biking store. If you are indoor cycling only, we suggest the Look Delta and SPD-compatible cleats for your spin shoes. Check with the Wheel House front desk for local specials.

Do I need to bring shoes?

Our bikes are fitted with pedals that can accommodate most shoes: Look Delta and SPD-compatible cleats for cycling shoes or use the bike cages for regular running shoes. You can bring your own cycling shoes or rent a pair when you check in from the front desk.

What should I wear for an indoor cycling class?

Comfortable workout attire is key. Biking shorts, or athletic leggings work best for spinning class and if you'd prefer padded cycling shorts are an option, which can make your ride more comfortable.. For those of you who have biking shoes, all of our Spinning® bikes are equipped with both "Look" and "SPD" clips. If you don't have biking shoes, we have baskets that can be applied to the bike so you can use your athletic shoes. We recommend comfortable workout attire, including padded bicycle shorts. Avoid loose fitting long pants that could get caught in the pedals. A full range of workout apparel is available for purchase at our studio.

Are Wheel House classes safe?

Wheel House classes are designed to be safe. We follow every best practice protocol in the fitness business and all staff are CPR trained. However, we always recommend that you consult your physicians for guidance on an exercise program that is safe for you.

Will indoor cycling improve my running?

We hear time and time again from our avid runners how happy they are that they’ve added indoor cycling to their cross-training routine. Most runners report that indoor cycling “balances” out their leg muscles, putting emphasis on muscle groups not normally used during running.

My butt hurts - How can I get more comfortable sitting on the saddle?

If you're new to Wheel House it may take a few classes for your body to get used to the saddle. Wearing padded cycling shorts or using a gel seat cover will definitely make your ride more comfortable. Also, the stronger you get, the less actual weight you will have on the saddle. You will learn to use your core strength more. It doesn’t take long to acclimate!.

If I have an injury from another sport, is indoor cycling a good alternative?

Beacause there is little to no impact to your joints while indoor cycling, it may be an excellent way to cross-train and avoid further injury. As always, though, only your doctor can determine if the cycling program is a safe option for you.

I have bad knees and back problems, is indoor cycling safe for me?

Of course you should always consult your physician before beginning a new exercise program, but with proper setup you should be just fine.

Yoga and Core

I'm not your yoga guru, you are.

Wheel House's philosophy, belief in self-empowerment — and that working out should be fun — combine to create a great, nonjudgmental atmosphere free of the forced sanctity found in so many yoga studios. At Wheel House, you're free to believe what you want — as long as you're ready to sweat.

Does Wheel House offer beginner and/or advanced level classes?

Wheel House offers yoga to students of various levels. Class difficulty is rated WH Athletic Yoga Flow levels 1 through 3; Level 1 being the introductory class. For levels 2-3, we recommend that you have practiced yoga for at least 1 year, or are referred by a Wheel House instructor after taking a WH Athletic Yoga Flow 1-2 class. For any level of class, be sure to make your instructor aware of any injuries or physical limitations so that they may offer necessary adjustments and alternative poses.

Does yoga burn calories? Can I lose weight by practicing yoga?

Definitely. Most individuals burn an average of 300-500 calories in a one-hour class. For the optimal effect, consider taking an indoor cycling class followed by yoga; this combination can burn about 1,000 calories.

If I do indoor cycling, yoga and core classes, which should I do first and why?

It’s best to do indoor cycling first. It heats up the body and brings you deeper into the fat burning zone. When our bodies are warm, the muscles stretch more easily. Yoga or core classes after indoor cycling continues to build strength. Indoor cycling not only burns 500+ calories per class, it continues to burn up to an additional 150-200 calories per day. Add a yoga or core class to that fire, and you’re a calorie-burning machine!.

If I do yoga do I still need to do weights?

We believe that Wheel House classes are all you really need in a fitness regimen. Many of our classes utilize body weight as the means of resistance. Regular practice has led to students developing a strong and toned physique as well as the ever desirable sculpted "yoga arms".

I'm not an athlete, can I still take yoga and core classes?

Absolutely! The classes are for anyone wanting a practical approach to flexibility, balance, strength, stress-reduction and injury-prevention. With regular attendance, you may even start to feel like an athlete!
